GENERAL SURGERY – Colonoscopy
A thin, flexible tube with a camera on the end is inserted through the anus to provide images of the large intestine and the part of the small intestine that is adjacent to the large intestine. Recto-sigmoidoscopy (the rectum and sigmoid are the last part of the large intestine) is the name given to a procedure that examines the part of the large intestine that is close to the anus. Before these procedures, the large intestine must be emptied with the aid of a laxative. This is the most reliable method of diagnosing colon (large intestinal) cancer. This method can also help protect patients from cancer by identifying polyps and similar precancerous lesions and aiding in their removal.
Note: In our facility, patients are put under sedation by an anesthesiologist during both of these procedures. This ensures that the patient does not experience discomfort during the procedure.
